According to the "2026 / 2027 Season Rainfall Forecast: National Outlook and Sector Guidance for the Coming Rainy Season", a Guide dated 11th September, 2026, produced and published by the Zambian Ministry of Green Economy and Environment via the Zambia Meteorological Department and issued by Edson Nkonde - the Director of Meteorology - at the time of this write up, it is forecasted that:
The agriculture sector in Zambia is generally projected to face varied impacts during this 2026 to 2027 rainfall season due to anticipated rainfall patterns. The southern and central provinces or regions of Zambia are expected to receive below-normal rainfall and experience prolonged dry spells. Therefore, farmers in these areas may encounter moisture stress leading to reduced crop yields. The general agricultural advice for these areas include preparing for a drier start, using drought-tolerant seeds, conserving water, and avoiding early planting based solely on early rains. Conversely, northern areas of the country are anticipated to experience near-normal to above-normal rainfall and might face waterlogging challenges, and should therefore be prepared for possible localized flooding.
Key aspects of the forecast include:
1. Overall Rainfall
Below-Normal rainfall is anticipated across most of Zambia, particularly in the southern and central regions. Above-Normal rainfall is expected in Luapula, Northern, Muchinga Provinces, and the northern parts of North-Western Province.
2. Dry Spells
Prolonged dry spells are likely between December, 2026 and February, 2027, especially in the southern half of Zambia, which coincides with the critical crop-flowering stage.
3. Flooding
Despite the general dryness, episodes of heavy rainfall and localized flooding are possible, particularly in the northern areas of the country.
2026 Farming and Rainfall Season Timing
The season is expected to start in October in the northern and Copperbelt regions, spreading southwards through November and reaching southern and eastern Zambia by December. A delayed onset is predicted for much of southern and south-eastern Zambia.
Rains are projected to end in March across most of the country, extending into April in the extreme north.
Sectoral Guidance
The forecast suggests potential impacts on agriculture (moisture stress, reduced yields in the south; waterlogging in the north), water resources (lower river flows in the south; improved availability in the north), energy, health, disaster risk management, livestock, fisheries, and transport.
General Public Farming Advisory and Warning ⚠️
Households and farmers in the southern/central belts are advised to prepare for a drier start, avoid planting early based on early rains, use drought-tolerant seeds, conserve water, and brace for dry spells. Those in the northern belt should expect near-normal to above-normal rains but prepare for possible localized flooding.
Conclusion
The farming fraternity is encouraged and/or advised to follow daily and weekly forecasts from the Zambia Meteorological Department for regular, recent and updated information regarding this 2026 to 2027 summary farming advisory bulletin or brief on this website.
